HOME VIDEO – does this reflect your routine? Do you find yourself refreshing the same newsfeed over and over? Even when you’re supposed to be concentrating on college work (emoji eyes)?

MONTAGE

The majority of teenagers today are seen transfixed to their mobile phones whether it be walking down the street, in their home or even at their college. College is supposed to be a place of education, but nowadays it is disturbed by the constant student buzz of social media.

TITLE SCREEN – UNCOVERED…

A 2013 study found seven in 10 British teachers believed children were becoming more and more obsessed with social media with half of those polled believing the fixation was affecting their ability to concentrate in class.

We went to The Sixth Form College, Solihull to investigate this further (SIGN) and conducted our own research, by handing out questionnaires to students, into the effects of social media on education. Results revealed that 90% of our target audience of students use social media on their phones whilst revising. We asked more students at the sixth form college the same question.

VOX POP of students

Two thirds of teachers say the quality of children's homework is poor as they rush to finish it so they can communicate with others online.

INTERVIEW WITH JANE

Through investigating the effects of social media on education, we found that there were opposing views between the teachers at the sixth form college.

Message to expert 3

Having been unable to find a suitable time to interview expert 1: Hayley Hemming, we decided to message English teacher Jane McCard to ask if she would be an expert instead. Here is the message. Also, we asked Student Development Officer, Julie Maitland to be a final expert.

Relevance and purpose of Tripod Training

Tripod skills

         The skills we have learnt...

  • We have learnt how to use a tripod quickly and efficiently
  • We are able to estimate the correct measures of where we want the tripod to set up for specific shots (e.g. correct heights)

Message to expert 2

This is the message we sent to Principal, Paul Ashdown asking him to be one of our experts for our expert interview.

Objectives (lesson 6)

This is a photograph of our objectives for lesson 6 of our coursework. We managed to complete these objectives which meant we kept on track and so we were able to move on to the planning stage (interview questions, voxpop questions and our storyboard).

Purpose of research into similar products part C

The purpose and relevance of researching into this documentary is to explore what kind of conventions a fly-on-the-wall documentary uses. This will help us take inspiration from these different styles and incorporate them into our mixed style. Educating Essex is about students and observes their time and life at school, therefore this was a significant and applicable program that could help us with the mise-en-scene of our own documentary, which is also based on students and college/school.

Progress Statement-Questionnaire and Focus Group

Wednesday, 1 October 2014

Summary and results of questionnaire.

These are the results from the questionnaires that we handed to one of our target audiences of students. These results proved to be very relevant as they helped us to decide the type/mode of documentary and gave us some statistics and background information to use in our documentary about our target audience and the genre.

Questionairre

Having watched a range of documentaries such as Educating Essex, Autopsy and David Attenborough’s Frozen Planet. We decided to conduct a questionnaire to find out what kind of documentaries our target audience (students) likes to watch and what their opinions are of the different types of documentary.

Post 8 - Reflection

We used our research on theorists to help us choose what style of documentary we would follow for our piece. As well as this we looked at the different types of documentary's to choose which would be the most appropriate for our documentary as this would let us see what conventions we would need to include. Using our research of narrative structure it will enable us to choose how we will set our documentary out in terms of structure.

Purpose of research - Documentary codes and conventions

Wednesday, 24 September 2014

Post 6 - Documentary conventions

Post 5 - Narrative Structure

The purpose and relevance of this presentation is to help is gain insight into the different types of narrative structure in order to decide what kind of narrative structure our documentary will be. Based on our target audience, it is likely to be a closed, single-strand narrative.

Post 4 - Types of documentary

The purpose and relevance of this research is to help us choose which type of documentary we will choose. It is most likely that we will choose to do a mixed style of documentary as this involves most conventions and will therefore give us chance to be able to include them in our filming. This gives us chance to visually see and read what each type of documentary involves, making our decision easier as we can easily choose which one we prefer the most. We will also have to choose which type to use on the basis of our target audience, however we haven't got to that stage of planning yet, so there is a possibility that our decision could change once we have conducted our audience research - questionnaire, focus group.

Post 3 - Documentary's and Theorists

Post 2 - Course Outline

For our A2 Media Studies coursework we had to get into groups of three. We were given a brief in which we were told that we would have to create the first five minutes of a TV documentary programme on a topic of our choice. As well as this, we need to do a few ancillary tasks including a radio trailer to promote the documentary, a double page spread from a listings magazine that is focused on the the documentary and finally, a blog to hold all our work.
Here is our blog.
